Ninety Three:

Ninety Three coffee machine was designed as a way to encourage people to make better quality coffee at home. This was born out of our love for coffee and our strong interest in speciality coffee. Speciality coffee is about crafting a better coffee in a precise and scientific way, using freshly roasted beans, taking a few minutes more and carefully preparing all elements needed and of course trying to explore the numerous flavours that coffee can have.

In order for a home user to get the most out of their coffee some of the complications and techniques are done by the machine and hidden from the user however, we strongly believed in helping to educate the user about coffee and keeping them interacting with the coffee through-out unlike the now common pod machines, so where its most valuable the actions are undertaken by the user. To make any good coffee you need a good beans, and to use the beans to their full potential they need to be ground specific to the type of coffee they will be used for and to a precise weight to water ratio. The first piece we designed was an intelligent grinder that would allow you to choose the type of coffee you want, espresso, filter etc. The grinder would then grind the exact amount for the coffee type to a particular coarseness.

The second element - the water, a central tap provides slow pouring water at exactly 93° which is the optimum temperature for brewing coffee for filter and for french press, underneath the tap is a weigh scales which allows the user to ensure the exact ratio of coffee to water is kept. To aid them, there is a display at the top of the tap to indicate what weight the coffee should be.

The third element - the machine, this is for making an espresso and steaming milk in order to make a cappuccino, for this, the grinder and espresso tap, work together, with the grinder indicating to the tap how much water to extract the coffee with, milk is then done by inserting a cup to the tap, the same way as you attach the espresso basket. It is then steamed from within and stopped when ready to pour.

All of these elements are combined with drainage and storage to make ninety three a highly functional and efficient machine. Its aesthetics are minimal with delicate and subtle details enhancing its overall form, inspired by modern architecture and interior trends it fits seamlessly into a kitchen and becomes a sculptural element on a counter top without taking up space. Its goal is to change how people make coffee at home and simply enhance the ritual and spectacle of making and enjoying a cup of coffee.
