We have recently completed our second print project where we have taken on the task of design, layout and illustration.
The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital in Dublin asked us to design their new 'Baby Fax' which is to help parents who have had a premature birth. The book acts as a type of 'Filofax', a handbook of everything about the Coombe, its staff and equipment as well as information for parents from the birth of their child to taking them home.
We were asked to create a concept that would suit the content of the book. It needed to be friendly and welcoming as some of the information can be overwhelming. For this we chose a soft, macaroon-inspired palette and paired each colour with a chapter for easy navigation. To avoid the book looking dated we avoided the use of photography. Instead we illustrated the hospital machinery that the parents will come into contact with while their baby is in care. This added character to the machines, conveying them in a more friendly, less technical light.
One of our previous print projects was the end of year book for NCAD's Industrial Design Department. This book was a showcase for all graduates and a platform to show their degree show work. We chose to photograph each student in the National Gallery with every student seated on a classic designer chair. (photography was done by curve creative). This book was the first that Industrial Design in NCAD had ever produced.
